If it isn't a main router, updating is not vital. For E1000, E3000, you could try freshtomato, which is safer than pulling the trigger on a random version of DD-WRT (even though the de-bricking isn't usually difficult). Or, for a sure bet on the E3000, DD-WRT 35550 K3.
To revert back to stock firmware download the latest E3000 firmware from linksys site, reset you router to defaults from within dd-wrt's webgui, wait, then login and select the stock firmware file and flash, make sure to select "reset to defaults" on the drop down menu when flashing. See http://homesupport.cisco.com/en-us/wireless/linksys/E3000. Download the stock firmware image from the manufacturer support website, reset the router back to defaults using a 30-30-30 hard reset, then flash the stock image from the DD-WRT GUI. Wait at least 5 minutes for it to finish, reset again, then access the Linksys GUI @192.168.1.1.
